Selection Process for UPSC Civil Services

The UPSC Civil Services Exam is renowned globally for its stringent and multi-layered selection methodology. To make it to the final merit list, a candidate must clear three distinct phases:

  1. Preliminary Examination (Objective Type): Conducted typically in May/June, this phase tests candidates on General Studies and Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT). The marks obtained here are only for qualification to the Mains and are not counted in the final merit list.
  2. Main Examination (Descriptive Type): Candidates who clear the Prelims write 9 subjective papers (2 qualifying language papers, 1 Essay, 4 General Studies, and 2 Optional subject papers). Total marks for this stage are 1750.
  3. Personality Test (Interview): Candidates who clear the Mains are called to the UPSC Bhavan in New Delhi for a 275-mark interview. The final merit is calculated out of 2025 marks (1750 Mains + 275 Interview).
