Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), one of the premier urban local bodies in Gujarat, has announced recruitment for the position of GIS Technician on a contractual basis through Press Release Office (P.R.O.) No. 578 dated January 17, 2026. This opportunity is available for the GIS Cell under the Town Planning Department at SMC headquarters in Surat. The corporation invites qualified candidates with expertise in Geographic Information Systems to participate in a walk-in interview scheduled for February 2, 2026.The GIS Technician role is critical for managing spatial data, conducting geographic analysis, and supporting urban planning initiatives at one of India's fastest-growing municipal corporations. Surat, known for its diamond and textile industries, has been rapidly modernizing its infrastructure, and the GIS Cell plays a vital role in digital mapping, spatial database management, and town planning applications. The selected candidate will work with cutting-edge GIS technology to support municipal administration and governance.Candidates with educational backgrounds in Geography, Geo-informatics, GIS, Remote Sensing, or Computer Science with GIS specialization are eligible. A minimum of three years of hands-on experience in GIS operations is mandatory, making this suitable for mid-career professionals. The position offers a competitive monthly remuneration of Rs. 35,000 on a fixed basis. While this is a contractual appointment without regular establishment claims, it provides valuable experience in municipal GIS applications and urban governance technology.The selected GIS Technician will be responsible for spatial data collection, processing, analysis, digital map preparation, GIS database maintenance, GPS data integration, and providing technical support for town planning projects. This role requires proficiency in GIS software like ArcGIS or QGIS, understanding of coordinate systems and projections, cartographic design skills, and knowledge of urban planning processes. The position offers exposure to real-world municipal applications of geospatial technology in areas such as property tax mapping, infrastructure planning, disaster management, and smart city initiatives.
